The Wijnkasteel, or wine castle, of Genoels-Elderen, with its 25 hectares of vineyards, is the largest wine estate in the country. With a history dating back to the Middle Ages, there is evidence that the property was one of the most important in the area due to the mineral rich soils. After a period of very cold winters in the late 18th Century wine-making tailed off, but luckily, due to a number of passionate and pioneering winemakers there has been a real boom in recent decades. Genoels-Elderen started re-planting on these historic soils in the1990s and have seen the quality levels go from strength to strength. Definitely an area to watch!
Zwarte Parel Brut, Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen
Region / Producer
This 100% Chardonnay dry sparkling wine is elegant, pure and wonderfully well-structured. It is made using the Champagne method and spends at least 18 months in bottle before release. A fine mousse brings to the surface delicious notes of exotic fruits including pineapple, melon, grapefruit and lemon. These flavours all come through on the palate along with a toasty nuttiness and a lovely, refreshing acidity. A great alternative to Champagne for someone looking for quality but from a novel appellation.
Aperitifts, smoked salmon, oysters
