Superb white Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres and white Côtes du Rhône from Clos du Caillou

Superb white Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres and white Côtes du Rhône from Clos du Caillou

The wine industry is rife with bureaucracy, and if there's one estate that received the short end of the administrative stick it is certainly Clos du Caillou. Located in Courthézon, in the northeastern part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, only 9 hectares of their total of 45 are actually allowed to be named as Châteauneuf, relegating the rest to Côtes du Rhône level, despite being surrounded fully by Châteauneuf vineyards and sharing the exact same famous terroir.

Story has it that when the Châteauneuf appellation was created in the 1920s, the owner at the time who didn't want to pay more taxes to use the AOC title, stood at his gates, rifle in hand, and prevented the appellation contrôlée representatives onto his land. As a result the AOC was created around their property and it is still that way to this day!

However, from a selfish standpoint this benefits us wine-drinkers and wine-buyers rather nicely, as it means we can enjoy Côtes du Rhônes that share all the intensity, concentration and length of a standard Châteauneuf, but at a fraction of the price, with the added pleasure of the perfume notes of the "garrigues" that grow wild between their vines.

So, considering this, their Châteauneufs are in a class of their own, and are some of the most elegant around, characterised by ripe fruit flavours, rich textures and pure style. Owned by the Vacheron family, with the famed Bruno Gaspard as winemaker, the team here keep producing consistently stunning wines year on year, having even become certified organic in 2010.

We have always had a few of the Caillou reds in our portfolio so we are very proud today to introduce you to two of the whites. A simply stunning pair that we want you try so are even offering a 5% discount!

"This is a wonderfully pretty and appealing wine. Lively, aromatic and fresh, there are layers of lemon rind, acacia, white flowers, grapefruit and mandarin, complemented by some spicy and herbal notes. A lovely minerally wine with a nice mouthfeel and long, aromatic finish." Genesis Wines

As the 2016's are so new they haven't been reviewed yet, below is the Parker review for the 2015 vintage:

"The 2015 Côtes du Rhône Bouquet des Garrigues Blanc, which has lots of Viognier character in its white peach, tangerine and floral aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, nicely textured and yet still fresh, drink it over the coming year or so." 90 points, Jeb Dunnock, erobertparker.com

WAS £36.00 per bottle inc. duty, inc. VAT
NOW £34.20 per bottle inc. duty, inc. VAT

"The complexity to this wine is absolutely stunning. There are a plethora of notes ranging from pineapple, passionfruit, peach liquor and kumquat to toasted brioche, vanilla and honey. Very seductive and with incredible aromatic length. A Genesis favourite!" Genesis Wines

As the 2016's are so new they haven't been reviewed yet, below is the Parker review for the 2015 vintage:

"The rock star 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc Les Safres offers tons of ripe citrus, pineapple, flowers and salty minerality in its richly textured, yet fresh and lively profile. It shows the warmth of the vintage, yet is always fresh and lively. I love it." 94 points, Jeb Dunnock, erobertparker.com
