There was a time when Austrian wines were even more unfashionable than their German neighbours, but this is no longer the case. Signature grape Grüner Veltliner often makes one of the first wines a sommelier will pencil into a new list.

Weingut Geyerhof owners, the Maier family, have been farming their land organically since 1988, favouring minimal intervention and handpicking, as well as varied picking times and lees ageing to create a portfolio with a wide range of characteristics.

It's fantastic to see the incredibly challenging and costly decision to work fully organically paying off, especially in the case of such a humble family-run project. As A La Carte magazine wrote in 2011, "the charming organic wine grower Ilse Maier has finally joined the league of top vintners"and we couldn't agree more!

"Aromatic notions of green and yellow pear play on the nose. These get intense on the palate with herbal savor: think arugula and salt, chervil and miso. 2015 Pet Nat 360°

Pétillant Naturel, or Pet Nat for short, is actually the original way of producing sparkling wines and predates the "Champagne method" by centuries. The method used here, known as the "ancestral method", allows the initial fermentation to finish in bottle (as opposed to ageing on lees, disgorging and then adding a dosage) without any additives, imparting a gentle carbonation by trapping carbon dioxide. The beauty, in our opinion, of Pet Nats is that each bottle is totally unique, varying in terms of carbonation and flavour profile due to the natural way in which each bottle fermented individually on its own terms. This stunning example is made from 100% Grüner Veltliner grapes and is a full, rich and tingling bubbly. We love it!

2015 Zweigelt StockWerk

In German, StockWerk means the work (Werk) on the vine (Stock). The Zweigelt StockWerk is sourced from vines growing on the hills of Oberfucha. These are cool sites south of the Danube river near the city of Krems where fruit ripens well while preserving its natural acidity. Vines grow on primary rocks and are hand harvested from vineyards that support a diversity of local flora and fauna. It has delicate cherry aromas, lush, enjoyable richness, fine aroma structure. Elegant and an ideal food wine. Serve it slightly chilled with venison, beef, pasta or a proper Goulash.

2015 Zweigelt Ried Richtern

Zweigelt’s parents are Blaufränkisch and Sankt Laurent. Quality examples show Pinot Noir like elegance from the Sankt Laurent and blue spicy fruit from the Blaufränkisch. The Ried Richtern from Geyerhof is an energetic almost exotic rendition from a mainly white wine region. Planted on deteriorating primary rock on the most exposed site near Obufucha, it possesses surprisingly boisterous fruit for what is still quite a cool locale. Couple this fruit with its peppery tartness and savory depth it will compliment almost any fowl dishes, but has the impact to stand up to richer dishes such as lamb, northern Italian inspired pastas and nutty cheeses like Edam. Best served slightly chilled.
