Domaine Tortochot - 2016 Burgundy En Primeur

Domaine Tortochot - 2016 Burgundy En Primeur

“It’s clear that quality is on the upswing here and this is a domaine worth following. Moreover, given the extremely reasonable prices the wines typically sell for, they are bargains, a descriptor one rarely hears uttered in the same breath with Côte de Nuits Grand Cru.” Allen Meadows

We are delighted to offer the 2016s from Domaine Tortochot today on an En Primeur basis. T&Cs apply*

Based in Gevrey Chambertin, the Tortochot family have been producing wines in the region since the 19th Century. The domaine as we know it today, however, was only established from the late 90s, when Chantal Tortochot was encouraged by her father to return to Burgundy at the age of 35, having previously worked in the finance department of an American petrochemical company. She left her corporate lifestyle first to study viticulture at the Jules Guyot Institute in Dijon, and then to join her father at the family domaine.

Her father had previously sold 100 or so barrels per year of village wines to Drouhin. Chantal however saw huge potential in the wines and began to bottle under the Tortochot label, and now 100% of the domaine’s produce is sold under their own name. Current production is approximately 60,000 bottles per year from 12 hectares made up of 34 parcels across village, premier and grand cru level vineyards. She started organically managing all the vineyards in 2003 and received certification in 2013.

Chantal prefers a more traditional approach to winemaking, as is seen by her strong focus on expressing the terroir of each vineyard, hand-harvesting, not fining or filtering and using indigenous yeasts. When talking about her style of Pinot Noir she explains: “Here we make a more traditional Gevrey Chambertin, with lots of fruit, strong tannins and good acidity. These are not really Pinots that can be drunk early…you have to be a little patient.”

This is a wonderfully charming estate that produces textbook Gevrey Chambertin. Given the well documented size of the 2016 harvest in Burgundy, we may have to allocate some wines and will do so on the basis of balanced orders. Shipping to UK approx. autumn 2018.

All wines offered in 6x75cl cases.
