99 point otherworldly wine, 2006 Astralis from Clarendon Hills at only £875/case

99 point otherworldly wine, 2006 Astralis from Clarendon Hills at only £875/case

In the late 1980s, biochemist and wine-lover Roman Bratasiuk decided he wanted to start producing his own wine. Looking for an area wealthy in old vines, he selected a site in Clarendon, part of the McLaren Vale wine region in South Australia. With no prior training as a winemaker he used his scientific background, refined palate and love for the great wines of the world to guide him. Although very much influenced by his favourite producers and styles, his real goal is to convey a sense of place and varietal expression in his wines.

The wine we're offering today is the 2006 Astralis, the flagship wine of the estate. The grapes all come from bush vines planted in the 1920s, on a single vineyard with a 45 degree slope, facing due east. The topsoil layer is made up of clay mixed with pebbles, while the subsoil layer is pure ironstone. All picking is done by hand, followed by rigorous sorting before pressing. Indigenous yeasts are used in fermentation, with no eventual fining or filtration.

All of this results in a stunning wine. Considered by many as the ultimate expression of Shiraz in Australia, and celebrated as one of the great wines of the world. It is effortlessly powerful, yet restrained. Complex, yet pure. We hate exaggerations, but we wholeheartedly agree with Roman and his wife Sue that this wine is "out of this world". And we're not the only ones, as Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded this vintage 99 points! It is already drinking very well, and will be in its prime for another 10+ years. Truly incredible value for just £875/case in bond.

"Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2006 Astralis has stunning nose redolent of warm blackberries, meat, toast and charcoal, infused with notes of smoked duck, anise and a slight bit of peat. Though still very youthful, this big, rich, and powerful full-bodied wine has firm yet velvety tannins, a vibrant acid line and is very long on the finish. Drink it now to 2026+."
99 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"A big wine, but amazingly supple, graceful and pure, offering cascades of wild blueberry, black cherry and plum fruit that play against spices such as cardamom, clove and black pepper. It's all seamlessly integrated with fine tannins and enough creamy oak to complete the picture. Syrah. Drink now through 2020."
