Historically the coastal Tuscan area of Morellino di Scansano has been a source for purchasing cheap Sangiovese grapes, with most going towards locally consumed table wines. In the mid 1980's, however, a young Elisabetta Gepetti inherited the estate of Fattoria le Pupille, and under her enthusiastic management the estate became a leading Tuscan winery and vastly improved the reputation of the whole area.
As a child Elisabetta spent her summer holidays at the estate, and foresaw a great potential for the agriculture of high quality vines within the beautiful rolling hills, rich with a sandy and stony soils. Teaming up initially with Giacomo Tachis, of Sassicaia fame, she created her most well-known wine, Saffredi. Nowadays the estate stretches over 75 hectares, with a number of vineyards dedicated to specific wines. The Poggio Valente, which we're offering today, is the baby brother to the Saffredi and demonstrates truly stunning value at just £120 per case of 6x75 in bond.
2013 was a fantastic vintage for Tuscany, with Monica Larner describing it as a "classic vintage with wines that show enormous power and depth." The Poggio Valente, which is made from 95% Sangiovese, as well as 5% Merlot to add body and a lush character, had a super year as well with the resulting wine displaying complexity, richness and an undeniable elegance.

“The 2013 Morellino di Scansano Riserva Poggio Valente is a breakthrough wine for Fattoria le Pupille and its talented winemaking team. This is a complete and balanced expression that shows its best side to all the senses: its appearance is richly saturated and bright; the bouquet is intense and complex; and the mouthfeel shows elegance and power. In all, this wine tastes and feels much younger than it really is and I have high hopes for its future aging ability. It shows a great sense of inner energy and liveliness that makes it a pleasure to drink in the near term as well. Soft flavors of black cherry, spice and grilled herb wrap thickly over the palate.” 95+/100 Monica Larner
“Le Pupille's 2013 Poggio Valente Riserva represents a clear stylistic departure from the past. Powerful, expressive and also dense, the 2013 nevertheless presents a super-classic interpretation of structure. Far from an easygoing wine, the 2013 is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. This is the second vintage aged in 500-600L barrels, a choice that has given the Poggio Valente a much more classic feel. The 2013 has only recently been bottled, but it is pretty impressive just the same. I can't wait to see how it ages.” 92/100 Antonio Galloni
