2004 La Rioja Alta 890 Re-Release

2004 La Rioja Alta 890 Re-Release

La Rioja Alta was established in 1890 and is widely regarded as one of the finest wineries in Rioja. It is renowned for the quality defining traditional oak- aged style of its Reservas and in particular of its Gran Reservas, the 904 and the 890. Both the Gran Reservas are only produced in exceptional years, and they are some of the finest wines being produced in Rioja today.

The Gran Reserva 890 is named after the date of the creation of La Rioja Alta (1890). It is of peerless complexity - only the estate's finest grapes make it into the cellar, and only the finest barrels make it into the 890 blend. It spends 6 years in American oak, during which time the wine is racked by candlelight. Once bottled, the wine is allowed to rest for a few more years before being released only when it is ready to drink.

2004 was an exceptional vintage in Rioja, with almost perfect growing conditions and this is a very special wine. Though drinking beautifully today, it will also happily cellar for many years to come.

A truly lovely wine, offered on a first come first served basis, so please do be quick...

"The 2004 Gran Reserva 890 is the top of the range here, a wine that is only released three/four times per decade in exceptional years. They start by sourcing grapes from their oldest vineyards and going through a slow process of aging the wine in American oak barrels for six years, with ten manual rackings, and each time there is a selection of only the best barrels. The bottled wine is 13.5% alcohol with a remarkably low pH (3.0) that to me means 'quality' of the acidity, which is a healthy six grams per liter (in tartaric). The nose is all about forest floor aromas, game, cigar ash, incense, old furniture and some smoked meat. The palate shows what the technical data was hinting--very fresh with slightly dusty tannins and nice acidity. It's polished, but feels livelier than some older vintages. 38,000 numbered bottles. Aug 2016, Drink: 2016-2024."  94 Points, Luis Gutierrez

"Lightly rusty in color, this outstanding gran reserva is just now entering its golden years, which should endure for another two decades or so. Aromas of raisin, malt, tobacco and cedar are beautiful... drink through 2040." 96 points, Wine Enthusiast
