The roots of Germany’s viticultural history can be traced back through the United Hospices (Vereinigte Hospitien); not only were their Roman wine cellars built on the same site dating back to 330 AD, but the first known evidence of Riesling cultivation in 1464 was written in a log belonging to Saint Jacob’s Hospital, a precursor of today’s United Hospices. Today this ancient institution has access to some superb vineyards along the Mosel and the Saar rivers from which they produce a large quality range of varying wine styles.
