Bierzo’s grape of choice is Mencia, and no that is not another regional name for Tempranillo! Probably its nearest comparison, if you had to make one, is to Cabernet Franc and there are some similarities in the smoky hardwood aromas. However, the wines from Valtuille are riper and more generous than those of the Loire. Just to the east of the province of Galicia, Bierzo is influenced by Atlantic weather systems not the Mediterranean – this can definitely be tasted in the northern European feel to the wine. The sprightly Joven is one of the best value wines on our list.
