Superb Languedoc offer

Trinites_Offer_v2

At last it feels like summer is here. The BBQ was dusted off last night for a spontaneous dinner with friends. Some wines from the Languedoc would have been great to serve with it as they are so often great quality drinking and affordable. Instead, we settled for a few reds and whites including a Matetic Syrah (Chile) and a bottle of Mt Beautiful Sauvignon Blanc (NZ) and both very good wines too. There will be plenty more occasions over the next few months, but the thought of what we might have been drinking led me to produce the offer below.

Last October we welcomed Englishman, Simon Coulshaw from Domaine des Trinités in Faugères.  The team tasted a range of whites and reds and we were most impressed. The first order from the domaine arrived a couple of week ago.

Simon is an ambitious character with a long-time passion for wine, a welcomed inheritance from his father. Raised in France he worked a number of harvests in his youth and later formally learnt the art of viticulture and wine making. The second phase of his wine producing career was to find a vineyard, and after viewing more than 100 properties, he eventually found exactly what he was looking for - situated at altitude, the vineyard is planted with mature local varieties, exactly what Simon and his Catalan wife Monica were looking for. The vineyards are north-facing with rocky schist soils, ideal in this often very hot part of France.

The local varieties of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Carignan and Cinsault are particularly well suited to express the terroir of soil, local herbaceous garrigue, and climate to provide plenty of blending options and multi dimensional wines.

Prices quoted are duty and VAT paid.

Wonderful notes of white flowers on the nose with some herbaceous tones too. Very fresh on the palate with delicate floral flavours and a fabulous streak of minerality. The balance of acidity and fruit is right on the money refreshing and lasting with excellent mouth feel.

Not overtly strong varietal character, subtle and so enjoyable.

40% Syrah, 30% Mourvedre 30% and 30% Grenache
This has a little more back-bone than the Coteaux du Languedoc with the syrah component showing through. Lovely spice with rich dark fruits on the nose - think of sweet red cherries blended with a little blackberry jam.  The palate is sweeter, ripe and very warming with an expressive mineral streak from the schist soils. Structured, yet elegant that finishes with a little pepper and mineral finish.

Ripe, plump and very alluring. The nose is earthy with notes of dark plum and currant. Very much a Northern Rhone style at considerable much lower price, there are some garrigue notes coming through too. The Viognier provides a more delicate flavour profile adding undertones of pear that softens that syrah.  Not a gentle wine by any stretch. Good depth and structure give a lasting finish. Don’t be put off by the Vin de Table monicker – this is Simon’s tribute to Cote Rotie and you cannot blend these two together in the Languedoc, hence why it’s a lowly VdT.
