Burgundy 2010 En Primeur Tasting

2010_Burgundy_banner

My trip to Burgundy in November to taste the 2010s will go down as one of the highlights of my career. There have been few years in recent memory that even come close to the quality of the 2010s, I am convinced this will go down as a legendary vintage in years to come. The quality is apparent across the board with even the “lesser” appellations producing wines of exceptional quality. As always there is a price to be paid for such vinous delights and in 2010 it is the size of the harvest. Yields might be down, but this is still a year to celebrate, with many growers raving about the sheer quality of the wines produced.

Pure Gold - Tokaji Hetszolo introductory offer

Created in 1502, Domaine Tokaji Hétszőlő is considered to have some of the most beautiful vineyards in Central Europe. It is truly historic to boot, having belonged over the years to many different owners including the princes of Transylvania, the princess of Brandenburg and the Rákózi princes. In 1711, the domaine became Imperial property and remained under the administration of the Austro-Hungarian crown for nearly two centuries. With its vineyard classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the domaine produces fine, unctuous aszú wines with incredible ageing potential. The estate is now owned by Michel Reybier, the proprietor of the rather famous Chateau Cos d’Estournel in Bordeaux.

Tokaji was the first wine to be made from botrytised grapes, also known as ‘noble rot’; it precedes Rhine wine by a century and Sauternes by two centuries. Tokaji is also the first wine region to be classified into growths (by Prince Rákóczi in 1700), by 1737 first, second, third and unclassified growths existed with three great growths, one in Tokaji and two in Tarcel. Unfortunately, during the communist era (from 1949) the quality of the greatest wine of Eastern Europe was compromised. Wines were confiscated and blended together in vast vats and allowed to oxidize. Since the fall of the communism the government has followed a policy of restoring vineyards and properties to their rightful owners and re-building Tokaji’s reputation as one of the most famous wines of the world.

This selection of both dry and sweet wines from Hétszőlő showcase the historic region of Tokaji. The Dry Furmint is a great wine for the summer drinking, but it is the sweeter Aszus where the real excitement lies and where you experience the complex, intense flavours, stunning balancing acidity and depth that makes Tokaji one of the truly most exciting wines of the world and are easily comparable in quality with the greatest Chateaux of Sauternes at a fraction of the price.
