Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2007 Brunello

piccolomini_label

From one of the finest names in all of Montalcino, we have the superb 2007 Brunellos from Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona.

Ciacci Piccolomini have long been not only one of my favourite producers in Italy, but one of my favourites worldwide. They seamlessly bridge the gap between traditional winemaking and historic vineyards with the best that modern viticulture has to offer.

Don’t just take my word for it though, James Suckling has just released his verdict on the ‘07s and they make for some great reading:

Brunello di Montalcino (Annata), Ciacci Piccolomini 2007 - £120.00 per case (6x75cl) in bond.

“Lots of fresh mushroom, with dark fruits on the nose. Full body, with silky tannins and a juicy finish. Balanced and attractive. Slightly chewy now. Better in 2015.”

92 Points - James Suckling.

Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso, Ciacci Piccolomini 2007 - £160.00 per case (6x75cl) In Bond. £165.00 (3x150cl) in bond. £65.00 (1x150cl in single Wooden Box) in bond.

“Complex aromas of red fruits, flowers and fresh mushrooms follow through to a full body, with ultra-fine tannins and intense fruit and bright acidity. Goes on for a long, long time. So juicy and fruity. Hints of bitter lemon rind. Give this two or three years more of bottle age.”

96 Points - James Suckling.

We also have a small allocation of the Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso Riserva (Santa Caterina) 2006 available. This is yet to be scored as this is the very first release of the wine, but James Suckling scored the straight Pianrosso 96 points for their 2006, so the Riserva is bound to be another world beater.

Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso Riserva (Santa Caterina), Ciacci Piccolomini 2006 - £250.00 per case (6x75cl) in bond or £125.00 (1x150cl in individual, numbered wooden collector’s boxes) in bond.

Spain's best kept secret

castro

The wines of El Castro de Valtuille (made by the extremely tallented Raul Perez) are one of the best examples of what the indigenous Mencia grape from Bierzo is capable of. Admittedly this is not where the mind immediately goes to when looking for the classic wines of Spain, but there is more to life outside of Rioja, The Ribeira and Priorat!

We have a limited availability of these wines so have put together a mini-Bin End offer for you to get stuck into:

Ronan by Clinet

ronan

From one of the finest stables in Pomerol, Château Clinet we are thrilled to be ale to offer the amazing Ronan by Clinet the most extraordinary value red wine under the sun”.

The vineyards for the Ronan are located just outside the Pomerol appellation, hence its AC Bordeaux status (although you wont find many Bordeaux Superieurs like this). The Ronan has been made to the same exacting standards as Clinet’s Grand Vin, and let’s not forget Parker scored that 97-100* in 2009!

"Ronan Laborde is the thirty-year-old managing director of the Pomerol superstar Château Clinet...Made from 100% Merlot and treated with every bit as much care and respect as the Grand Vin...The quality of wine inside the bottle is bafflingly serious, particularly bearing in mind its price tag. Remember that 2009 was a stellar vintage in Bordeaux, with en primeur prices going completely bananas. For this reason and many others this wine is unmissable... I could quite easily believe that this was a wine of three or even four times the price, this must be the most extraordinary value red wine under the sun. Wines like this do not come along very often, particularly from Bordeaux, so think of Ronan as this year's eureka claret and pick up the phone now." – Matthew Jukes

So pick up some of this extraordinary wine whilst you can...

Ogier's Viognier Rosine 2009

ogier

At the risk of jumping on the (long overdue) bandwagon, we have a phenomenal Viognier to offer at an amazing price.

I know it seems the entire Wine industry is singing the praises of the much overlooked Viognier at the moment (a cause we have been championing for many a year I may add) but its time we showed our hand in the form of the world beating Vin de Pays Viognier, Rosine 2009 from the delightful Stephane Ogier.

  viognier

Stephane may be young, but we firmly believe that he is the hottest young wine maker in Ampuis and his wines are only going to improve further. He makes some stunning wines both rich in flavour and full of delicate finesse. As well as his top Cote Rotie wines Stephane produces his “house” Syrah and Viognier that truely reflect his talents, and it is the latter that we are concentrating on today.

Robert Parker had this to say of Ogier; One of France’s most brilliant small artisanal wineries is that of the Ogier family in Ampuis, situated about six blocks north of Guigal’s vast network of underground cellars.”

rosine_label

The Viognier Rosine is made from a patch of Vines Stephane purchased right on the edge of the Condrieu Appellation (the plot itself spans from inside to just outside the AOC boundary) and the fruit is every bit as good as that on the other side! The only decisive difference in my opinion is the price tag, when was the last time you saw a Condrieu under £20?

Ogier’s ’09 Viognier Rosine boasts an amazing bouquet; notes of honeysuckle peaches and spiced apricots wrapped in a delicate floral blanket. Alvear 1927 Solera PX offer

alvear_logo

Alvear 1927 Solera Pedro Ximenez.

One of the holy grails of the wine industry is finding something with serious fine wine flavour but with a table wine price tag. The sublime 1927 Solera Pedro Ximenez from Alvear is a perfect example of this rarest of finds.

The wines of Montilla Moriles produce some fantastic alternatives to their more famous cousins made in Jerez; they can boast all the flavour and complexities of the finest Sherry, but with an added subtleness as these wines are not fortified.

Label-Alvear-Pedro-Ximenez-Solera-1

“The Alvear 1927 Solera Pedro Ximenez is an absolute treat, boasting a huge array of dried fruit flavours with an underlying toasty edge throughout. On the nose you get a big hit of figs and dried dates with a lingering sweet spice that caries through to the palate. More dried fruits and tea cakes blend in with the toasty oxidative notes and long nutty spiced finish. As good as this wine is on its own, in my mind its best served over Cornish vanilla ice cream – simply perfection!”

Genesis Wines.

“The impressive 1927 Pedro Ximenez Solera, from a Solera begun nearly 80 years ago, boasts a dark amber color as well as an extraordinary nose of creme brulee, liquefied nuts, marmalade, and maple syrup. Huge and viscous, yet neither cloyingly sweet nor heavy, it is a profound effort priced unbelievably low. It is meant to be drunk alone at the end of a meal.”

96 - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #159

Jancis Robinson 17.5

Wine Spectator 92 points

The Solera its self was started in 1927, its succession of barrels were filled with the wine over a series of years/decades. One container is filled for each year. At the end of the year after the last barrel was filled, the oldest barrel in the Solera is tapped for part of its content, which is then bottled. Then that barrel is then refilled from the next oldest. This continues on along the line until the first barrel is ready for new wine to be added and the process started again.
