Brewer Clifton / Melville 2010 releases

Brewer-Clifton_banner

We are delighted to offer the superb 2010 vintage from Brewer Clifton, the legendary producers from California’s Santa Barbara region. The area came to prominence in the early 1990s and is particularly known for being the location of some of the most pro-active and innovative producers anywhere in the US.

Brewer-Clifton was founded by Greg Brewer and Steve Clifton. As the former notes; “It is our primary goal and priority to deliver the essence of the vineyard as clearly and honestly as possible.” They do this by sourcing parcels, which they vinify and bottle separately, from growers in all corners of the county.

Along with the fantastic Brewer Clifton wines we are thrilled to be able to offer the Melville Vineyards wines, also produced by head wine maker Greg Brewer. Owned and run by the Melville family this estate began its life with a similar Burgundian obsession that bought Ron Melville together with Greg Brewer, initially selling him their grapes and eventually creating a superb partnership in their Santa Ynez winery.

We are huge fans of these wines here at Genesis and the initial verdict on the 2010 vintage is extremely exciting. They really prove that whereas Pinot Noir struggles in the Sonoma and Napa valleys, ironically further south in the Santa Barbara area (and specifically in the Santa Rita Hills appellation) where the cooling Pacific breeze benefits the vines so much that great Pinot is more than possible in California. We rate the wines here along side some of the best names in Burgundy.

As ever quantities of these wines are very limited and are likely to be in strong demand. Contact us to secure your allocation. Wines are priced in bond and will be shipped in October 2012.

Weingut Geyerhof: Summer in a glass

banner_with_logo

In light of the recent sporting spectacular we seem to have developed a more optimistic outlook on this less than perfect summer here at Genesis. With that in mind I feel it’s about time to shout about some of the slightly less well known, though no less superb summer whites in our portfolio.

Austrian wines have had a bit of a bad rap in recent decades for one reason or another, but with the rising interest in its flagship indigenous grape, Gruner Veltliner, and the amount of work and funding that has gone into the industry this stigma has been thoroughly shaken off in recent years.

Ilse_glass

One of the estates that have been spearheading this quality standpoint is the superb Weingut Geyerhof in Kremstal: an organic, 15hectre estate situated on the downward slopes of the Danube Valley. Owned by Ilse and Josef Maier, Geyerhof now produce some of the finest wines in the region.

AUT01211S / White / Austria / £19.50 per bottle
£117.00
A delicious crisp green yellow wine with a juicy apple and white peach nose. The palate follows on with more stone fruits and a touch of white pepper spice. Good minerality and a glossy mouth feel lead onto a long delicate finish – This is drinking spectacularly now but will keep its freshness ...

Gruner Veltliner Hoher Rain Weingut Geyerhof / 2011 / 6x75CL
AUT01011S / White / Austria / £15.00 per bottle
£90.00
The Hoher Rain is a more complex vibrant Gruner. The stone fruits are up-front and riper whilst the spiced notes have taken on a slightly sweeter edge. This is a much fuller style from Geyerhof but one that truly shows off what this grape can do – This is a Gruner that will age beautifully over ...

Monprivato Barolo 2008 Release

 Mascarello_Logo_Banner

After the thoroughly underwhelming 2011 Bordeaux campaign, the 2008 releases are exactly what the wine buying public needs to restore a little faith: A genuinely great vintage at a reasonable price-point, something of a breath of fresh air in comparison.

The 2008 growing season was by no means as warm as in 2007 giving a much more subdued character to the wines in their early life. The season was long and reasonably cool with the perfect Indian summer to finish it off. These are the ideal growing conditions for Nebbiolo, allowing the fruit to fully ripen at a leisurely pace and maintain their minerality, whilst the skins became dark and thick, adding weight and well integrated tannins to the wine.

There is less upfront fruit upon release with the 2008s, but instead these wines show beautiful balance with all the hallmarks of a classic Barolo vintage: amazing structure, perfumed fruits and a real sense of the terroir. Guiseppe himself remarked that the 2008 was probably the best Monprivato he has made in 15 years.

“The 2008 Barolo Monprivato is understated, classy and very pretty. It comes across as seamless and pure, although it will be quite a few years before the wine is ready. The 2008 is mostly remarkable for its textural finesse and sheer delicateness. Crushed flowers, spices and licorice wrap around the eternal finish. I expect the 2008 will firm up once it is in bottle, but if this sneak preview is any indication, the wine is shaping up beautifully. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038.” 93-95+ Antonio Galloni (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate)

Each bottle is also individually numbered, making every bottle a guaranteed collectors item.

Please note: all prices are quoted In Bond and offered on an En Primeur basis. The wines are due to be shipped from December 2012.

"2011 is a tricky vintage for Bordeaux. That having been said it is important not to completely write the year off without first considering that there are some really good reds to report on as well as some of the finest whites and Sauternes in many years.

There is variability throughout both left and right banks. In a vintage where the mantra should have been “less is more” it is interesting that some people got it absolutely right by letting nature do its thing and not interfering. Equally it is extraordinary how some of the Châteaux thought they would try and do some tweaks, resulting in many oak extracted monsters.

The vintage was always going to fall in the shadow of the two great years that preceded it; the weather conditions were far from ideal and the general market is challenging. However the best wines at every level are definitely worthy of consideration."
