Pagodes de Cos, Saint Estephe 2001 (12×75cl)

Referred to as Cos d’Estournel’s second wine the vines that produce this are eventually used for the ‘Grand Vin’ which is a 1855 Grand Cru Classé. In 2001 the Château produced some great wines including the Pagodes. It is recommended by the Château that the Pagodes de cos wines be enjoyed within 10 years after bottling, this one is drinking superbly now and will do so for a couple of years to come. With wonderful cassis, red fruits and cedar like flavours coming through the wine expresses finesse and elegance. The mouth feel is expansive with savoury tannins. Soft on the palate the finish is earthy with medium length.

Wines from Domaine de Montille allure people through expressions of place and season. Elegance, complexity, transparent fruit tones are words often used to describe the great wines of Burgundy, the Corton Clos du Roi can claim these and much more. With its seductive sense the nose is deep and full with aromas of cherry, a touch of forest floor, vanilla and perfumed red flowers. The palate is soft on the attack but then welcomes flavours of cherry jam, a little raspberry, some spice and good minerality. The tannins are layered, soft to begin with enhanced with low acidity, then firm towards the finish. The wine has lots of length with hints of tea, a touch of spice with some mineral tones completing the experience.

Founded by Henri Gouges, grandsons Pierre and Christian carry on the traditions of the estate. With uncompromising quality Pierre works the vineyard and Christian the cellar. A maximum 20% new oak is used ensuring the bouquet of the fruit and varietal are maintained. This medium style red has a cherry and flower perfumed nose. The palate expresses good minerality from the limestone and buckets of sweet cherry. The tannins coat the mouth and are layered with a little seasoned oak. Genesis Wines
While hardly surprising, this is the most elegant and refined wine in the range with a beguiling mix of red and dark berry fruit aromas nuanced by plenty of Nuits style earth and hints of game and underbrush that can also be found on the rich, sweet, full and attractively textured flavors that are at once delicious yet serious, well-muscled, precise and mineral-inflected while being supported by very firm tannins and first rate length.
