From the Andalucian south of Spain, Montilla’s fortified wines have some similarities with Sherry, but they are far less well known, though it’s worth noting that ‘Amontillado’ means ‘after the style of Montilla’. One of the differences is that Pedro Ximenez is the grape of choice for both dry and sweet cuvées with not a splash of Palomino to be seen. Family owned, Alvear produces a wide range of styles. The Fino En Rama is zesty and pithy; the Carlos VII is a classic Amontillado with strong nutty notes and extra length. The Oloroso is richer and sweeter with great complexity and is suited to desserts and cheeses. The Solera was started in 1927 and is still being maintained. All in all these are beautifully made and distinctive wines that deserve a wider audience.
Interestingly this wine combines the winemaking practices of a Fino with the use of flor (Saccharomyces a blanket of yeast keeping retaining fruit characters) and the slow oxidation of an Oloroso. Slightly sweet but dry this Amontillado is aged in 500L American oak barrels for 6 years. With the ...
